Throughout his career, he taught elementary music, directed middle school orchestras, and later led the high school orchestras at both East and West High Schools, helping shape the musical journeys of countless students with extraordinary care and enthusiasm.

Since becoming High School Orchestra Director in 2006, Joseph Gumpper built a program known not only for musical excellence but also for community, discipline, and compassion. Students describe his classroom as a place where they felt encouraged, challenged, and genuinely valued. He believed deeply in the power of music to unite people and transform lives, and he worked tirelessly to help students grow both as musicians and as individuals.

Beyond the classroom, Joe was widely respected throughout the Capital Region arts community. He contributed his talents to Shenendehowa musical theater productions, most recently conducting the orchestra for Mamma Mia!, bringing professionalism, passion, and energy to every performance. Earlier in his career, he also directed the Delmar Community Orchestra, sharing his love for music with audiences throughout the region and helping foster appreciation for the arts.

Colleagues remember Mr. Gumpper as an exceptional educator, compassionate mentor, and supportive friend whose dedication never wavered.
