The community of Ottumwa is mourning the tragic loss of 18-year-old Ashlin Knuth, who died following a serious two-vehicle crash Sunday night at the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and Roemer Avenue, according to the Ottumwa Police Department.
Authorities said officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:19 p.m. on May 17 after receiving reports of a collision involving two vehicles.
Preliminary findings indicate that Knuth was driving a 2005 Mini Cooper westbound on Roemer Avenue when the crash occurred. Investigators reported that a 2005 Dodge Dakota driven by 21-year-old Nathaniel Hart of Ottumwa was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 34 when the two vehicles collided.
According to officials, the impact caused the front of the pickup truck to strike the driver’s side of Knuth’s vehicle.
Emergency responders from the Ottumwa Fire Department and Ottumwa Regional Mobile Intensive Care Services worked to extricate Knuth and an 18-year-old male passenger from the heavily damaged Mini Cooper. Both occupants were transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment.
Authorities later confirmed that Ashlin Knuth died from injuries sustained in the crash. Officials stated that Nathaniel Hart was not injured.
Investigators have not yet released additional details regarding possible contributing factors, and the fatal crash remains under active investigation.
As loved ones grieve this heartbreaking loss, Ashlin Knuth is being remembered for the life she lived, the memories she created, and the impact she had on family, friends, and those who knew her.
