A tragic collision involving a passenger vehicle and a dump truck on Old Highway 99 earlier this week has claimed the life of James Emerson, 75, of Rochester, according to the Thurston County Coroner’s Office.

Coroner Gary Warnock confirmed on May 22 that Emerson died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the crash.

Crash Details

Emergency crews were dispatched around 9 a.m. Monday to Old Highway 99 between Tenino and Tilley Road following reports of a serious two-vehicle collision.

When first responders arrived, both vehicles involved were engulfed in flames, creating dangerous conditions for firefighters and rescue personnel working at the scene.

Authorities said Emerson, who was driving the passenger vehicle, died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.

Initial information from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Emerson’s vehicle was in the dump truck’s lane at the time of the collision, though investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to cross over or what factors contributed to the crash.

Injuries and Emergency Response

The driver of the dump truck sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not released an update regarding his condition.

Because of the intense vehicle fires and extensive investigation efforts, Old Highway 99 remained closed for several hours while crews extinguished flames, cleared debris, and documented evidence. The roadway reopened later Monday evening with reduced speed limits temporarily in place.

Several agencies responded to assist during the emergency response, including:

  • South Thurston Fire
  • West Thurston Fire
  • Tumwater Fire Department

Their coordinated efforts helped manage the hazardous scene and secure the roadway safely.

Ongoing Investigation

Investigators continue working to determine the exact cause of the crash. Authorities have not yet stated whether speed, distraction, weather, mechanical failure, or medical issues may have played a role.

As the investigation moves forward, family members and friends are mourning the sudden loss of James Emerson, remembering him with love, sadness, and respect. Community members continue offering condolences and support to those affected by the tragedy.
