With profound sadness, the Heidelberg Borough community is mourning the sudden passing of Police Chief Dennis Dixon, 57, a respected law enforcement leader whose years of service left a lasting impact on the borough and surrounding communities.
According to Allegheny County Police, Chief Dixon was found deceased inside his patrol vehicle Monday night in the 600 block of Grant Avenue at approximately 8:50 p.m. Authorities stated that his death does not appear to be suspicious, though the investigation remains ongoing. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released an official cause or manner of death.
Chief Dixon dedicated nearly two decades of service to the Heidelberg Police Department, serving for 18 years and leading the department as chief since 2018. Throughout his career, he earned a reputation for professionalism, integrity, and unwavering dedication to public safety.
Before becoming police chief, Dixon served as a sergeant overseeing the department’s K-9 unit alongside his police dog, Rocky. He later advanced to lieutenant and was selected to attend the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia — an achievement reflecting his commitment to leadership and excellence in law enforcement.
Heidelberg Mayor Ken LaSota remembered Dixon as a devoted public servant with a “very distinctive career,” noting that despite leading a smaller department, his training, leadership, and dedication earned widespread respect both locally and beyond the borough.
Chief Dixon is survived by his wife and two children, who now face an immeasurable loss. His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences and support from neighboring police departments, fellow officers, friends, and community members. During this difficult time, surrounding agencies are assisting Heidelberg Borough through mutual aid support.
Dennis Dixon will be remembered not only for his accomplishments in law enforcement, but for his steadfast service, leadership, and commitment to protecting the community he proudly served for many years.
His legacy will continue to live on in the lives he touched and the department he helped shape.
