The community of Baton Rouge is mourning the tragic loss of Na’Quail Weaver, who died after a shooting inside The Athlete’s Foot earlier this month along Florida Boulevard.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the store around 3:07 p.m. on May 14. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Weaver suffering from a critical gunshot wound.
Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where medical teams attempted lifesaving treatment. Despite those efforts, the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office later confirmed that Weaver succumbed to his injuries.
The loss has devastated family members, friends, and loved ones, many of whom continue to grieve a life taken far too soon. As news of his death spread throughout Baton Rouge, community members expressed sorrow and frustration over another deadly act of gun violence impacting local families.
Investigators immediately launched an inquiry into the shooting and later announced that Deandre Selmon, 26, turned himself in to police accompanied by his attorney. Authorities stated that Selmon was initially booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Officials indicated that additional charges could follow following Weaver’s death.
At this time, police have not publicly disclosed what led to the shooting or released further details regarding the circumstances inside the store. Detectives continue reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and working to determine exactly what occurred.
As the investigation remains ongoing, loved ones are remembering Na’Quail Weaver for the life he lived, the relationships he built, and the people who cared deeply for him — rather than the violence that ended his life.
His death stands as another painful reminder of the devastating impact gun violence continues to have on communities and families across the country.
May Na’Quail Weaver rest in peace.
