Raleigh authorities launched a major investigation Friday after a man and woman were shot near the courthouse district in downtown Raleigh, leading to a heavy police presence, temporary road closures, and widespread concern throughout the city.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers responded Friday morning to reports of gunfire near the Wake County Justice Center in the downtown area.
Investigators said the shooting occurred near the 300 block of Fayetteville Street, close to Martin Street between Fayetteville and Salisbury streets. Officers quickly secured the area while emergency responders treated victims and investigators processed evidence at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that two individuals — a man and a woman — suffered gunshot wounds during the incident. Officials have not yet publicly identified the victims or released updates regarding their medical conditions.
Witnesses described seeing numerous officers rushing into the courthouse district moments after gunfire erupted. Some reports indicated panic among courthouse employees, attorneys, and nearby pedestrians as law enforcement flooded the area and blocked surrounding streets.
Police later announced that suspects had been taken into custody shortly after the shooting and emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Officials have not yet disclosed a possible motive, whether the victims and suspects knew one another, or if additional charges may follow as the investigation develops.
The shooting caused major disruptions throughout downtown Raleigh as patrol vehicles, crime scene investigators, and emergency responders remained stationed throughout the courthouse district. Social media footage shared by witnesses showed police tape surrounding sections of Fayetteville Street while officers restricted access to nearby buildings.
The incident has sparked concern because of its location near one of Raleigh’s busiest government and business corridors, an area heavily traveled daily by courthouse staff, attorneys, residents, and visitors.
Authorities continue reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and collecting forensic evidence as the investigation remains active. Anyone with information related to the shooting is encouraged to contact the Raleigh Police Department.
