Michigan City authorities are continuing to investigate a shooting that left a police officer wounded Friday morning inside the emergency room lobby at Franciscan Health Michigan City, prompting a large law enforcement response and a temporary lockdown of the hospital facility.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. at the hospital located on Franciscan Way. According to officials, gunfire erupted inside the ER lobby area, where one officer was struck and immediately treated by emergency room personnel already on site.
Authorities later identified the injured officer as Jon Samuelson, a 33-year-old K9 officer with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. He was airlifted to a hospital in South Bend in critical condition following the shooting.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as Sharon Grafton Jr., 22, of Chicago, was quickly taken into custody after the incident. Law enforcement sources indicated the suspect was allegedly wanted in connection with an armed vehicle theft and domestic-related carjacking investigation originating in Chicago before entering Indiana.
According to Indiana State Police, Samuelson had encountered the suspect earlier after spotting a disabled vehicle along State Road 2 in LaPorte County. Authorities say the suspect requested transportation to the hospital, where events later escalated inside the emergency department.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and panic immediately following the gunfire, with some early reports suggesting an active shooter situation within the hospital. Multiple local and state law enforcement agencies responded as officers secured the building and began processing evidence.
Following the incident, Franciscan Health Michigan City was temporarily placed on lockdown while investigators examined the scene. Hospital officials later stated there was no ongoing threat to patients, staff, or the surrounding community. Some hospital services were temporarily impacted, including emergency department ambulance traffic.
Authorities have not announced additional charges or whether further suspects may be connected to the investigation. Officials continue interviewing witnesses and reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
