The Hobe Sound and Martin County communities are mourning the tragic loss of Christopher Brooks, an 18-year-old senior at South Fork High School who was killed Thursday morning in a devastating traffic crash just hours before graduation activities were set to begin.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Brooks was driving northbound on Pratt Whitney Road around 8:30 a.m. on his way to graduation practice when he reportedly failed to stop at a traffic signal near Bulldog Way. Investigators said his vehicle collided with the rear of a dump truck that was stopped at a red light.

Authorities described the impact as severe, and Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek stated during a news briefing that Brooks was widely known and respected throughout the school community. He described him as a beloved student who participated in the school’s agricultural and shop programs and whose loss has deeply affected classmates, teachers, and staff.

Officials also noted that Brooks had been raised by his grandparents, who served as his legal guardians. They reportedly arrived at the crash scene shortly after the collision and remained with investigators throughout the morning.
