Family, friends, classmates, and the wider Chicago community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of 11-year-old Iker Paredes, who died following a tragic two-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 290 near 25th Street, according to the Illinois State Police.

Troopers responded shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday to the westbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway near Bellwood, Broadview, and Maywood following reports of a serious collision involving two vehicles, one of which overturned.

Authorities confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene while five others were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as Iker Paredes of Chicago.

Due to the severity of the crash, all westbound lanes of I-290 were shut down for several hours as investigators conducted an on-scene reconstruction. Traffic was diverted onto 17th Avenue while emergency crews worked to clear the roadway and investigate the collision. The crash remains under active investigation.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a fundraiser titled “Honoring Iker — Support The Tamale Guy Family” was launched to assist the family with funeral expenses and related costs. Loved ones describe Iker as a beloved fourth-grade student at Talcott Fine Arts Academy and a dedicated young soccer player with the Chicago City Soccer Club.

As the community grieves, many are remembering Iker for the joy, energy, and happiness he brought to those around him. His sudden passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, classmates, teammates, and teachers.

Condolences and messages of support continue to pour in as loved ones honor Iker’s memory and stand beside his family during this devastating time.
