A grieving mother is sharing the heartbreaking story of her infant son, Samir, who passed away after enduring months of severe medical complications following an extremely premature birth and an extended stay in the neonatal intensive care unit.

According to his mother, Brittney Brimzy, Samir and his twin sibling were born at just 24 weeks and 3 days gestation. Due to their critical condition, both babies were immediately admitted to the NICU, where they remained for more than four months receiving intensive medical care.

Throughout his short life, Samir faced numerous medical challenges. Brimzy explained that before being discharged from the hospital, Samir underwent surgery to have a shunt placed in his brain. He was finally allowed to go home on May 12, 2025, but his mother quickly became concerned after noticing changes in his behavior and condition.

She said Samir stopped visually tracking, cried constantly, and appeared unlike himself. Despite repeatedly expressing concerns, she was reportedly told he needed additional time to adjust after leaving the hospital.

As his condition worsened, Samir was readmitted on June 14. Doctors initially investigated possible shunt complications and infection concerns before later discovering that he had developed a severe brain infection accompanied by frequent seizures.

Brimzy fought to have her son transferred for additional specialized treatment, eventually succeeding in moving him to Texas Children’s Hospital on July 5. There, doctors informed the family that Samir had suffered a severe and irreversible traumatic brain injury.

Over the following months, Samir underwent multiple brain surgeries and became dependent on a ventilator and tracheostomy. His mother said he also lost much of his vision and hearing while continuing to require constant specialized care.

Despite the overwhelming medical challenges, Brimzy described her son as deeply loved and full of light, saying he brought joy to those around him throughout his difficult journey.

The family had previously launched a fundraiser to help with mounting medical expenses during Samir’s hospitalization. Following his passing on May 13, the fundraiser was updated to assist with funeral and memorial costs.

Loved ones continue surrounding the family with prayers, condolences, and support as they mourn the devastating loss of a child whose life, though tragically brief, touched many hearts.

May Samir rest in peace.
