WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — A tragic overnight crash in a construction zone along Interstate 75 claimed the life of a woman and seriously injured a man after a van slammed into the rear of a stopped box truck, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the collision occurred on northbound I-75 just north of State Route 582 during active overnight road construction operations. Traffic in the area had slowed and come to a stop because the left lane was closed for construction work, causing congestion along the interstate.

Preliminary investigation revealed that both the van and the box truck were traveling in the middle lane before the crash. Troopers said the box truck had stopped due to backed-up traffic ahead when the van crashed into its rear.

Inside the van were three occupants: an adult female driver, an adult male passenger, and a child passenger. Investigators stated that the man and child had been lying down asleep in the rear portion of the van at the time of the collision and were not wearing seatbelts. Authorities also confirmed that the female driver was not restrained.

Emergency crews transported all three occupants to a nearby hospital following the crash. The female driver later died from her injuries, while the adult male passenger suffered serious injuries. The child sustained minor injuries, according to investigators.

The driver of the box truck was not injured.

The crash temporarily disrupted overnight traffic as emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene. Officials later reopened lanes following the completion of construction activity and crash cleanup efforts.

Troopers continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Authorities are also emphasizing the importance of seatbelt use, particularly in active work zones where sudden traffic slowdowns are common.

Officials urged motorists to remain alert, reduce speed in construction areas, and ensure that every passenger is properly restrained while traveling.

Investigators said the deadly crash serves as another tragic reminder of the dangers associated with construction zone traffic and the potentially fatal consequences of not wearing seatbelts.
