The Madison community is mourning the tragic loss of Joseph R. Baez, a 28-year-old resident of Providence who died Tuesday afternoon after a motorcycle collision on Interstate 95 South near Exit 60.
According to the Connecticut State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 1:43 p.m. when Baez, traveling southbound on a motorcycle, collided with the rear of a Subaru Crosstrek traveling in the same direction. Preliminary findings indicate the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to impact. Investigators also noted that the motorcycle did not have a license plate attached at the time of the collision.
The Subaru was being driven by a 74-year-old woman from Guilford, who was not injured in the crash and did not require medical attention.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and transported Joseph R. Baez to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment. Despite extensive medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The collision prompted a major emergency response, temporarily shutting down portions of I-95 South while authorities documented the scene and conducted accident reconstruction work. Traffic delays affected commuters traveling through Madison, Guilford, and nearby coastal areas during the afternoon hours.
State police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not confirmed whether additional factors such as impairment, weather conditions, roadway conditions, or traffic congestion contributed to the collision. Accident reconstruction teams are reviewing evidence from the scene, including roadway markings, vehicle positioning, and witness accounts.
Investigators are also asking anyone who may have witnessed the motorcycle or Subaru prior to the crash to contact authorities as the investigation remains ongoing.
