The Cincinnati community is mourning the tragic loss of Robert Lee Rothwell III, who died after a violent shooting on northbound Interstate 71 on Thursday afternoon, May 21, 2026.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Rothwell was traveling in a vehicle with two other individuals near Stewart Road in the Silverton area when gunfire erupted from another vehicle. During the incident, Robert was struck by at least one bullet. Authorities say the vehicle he occupied later crashed into a guardrail amid the chaos on the interstate.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported Rothwell to UC Medical Center for emergency treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators continue working to determine what led to the deadly shooting. Witnesses reportedly described the suspected vehicle as a dark-colored SUV, but no suspect information or motive has yet been confirmed.
